Mission
The Department of Teacher Education prepares professional, academically capable, and personally responsible entry-level educators to serve in diverse educational communities.
Concordia University, founded in 1893, has been preparing educators for their profession since 1950.
Our Conceptual Framework, Educator as Professional Decision Maker, informs the content and practice in the College of Education. A coordinated set of courses and field experiences provides graduates and completers with opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and personal qualities in the context of our urban and diverse environment. In our field-based, theory-into-practice approach, our teachers are thoroughly prepared in the content of their subject matter and in their knowledge of how children develop and learn. They develop a useful repertoire of teaching strategies and they demonstrate the personal qualities that enable those entrusted to their care to learn.
Concordia University - St. Paul - is fully accredited by the state of Minnesota and by the National Association of Colleges of Teachers of Education (NCATE, since 1969). Many universities and colleges that offer teacher education are not accredited by the national organization. At Concordia University - St. Paul- we take pride in our ongoing accreditation. We believe that we are simply the best teacher education program in the state of Minnesota and the best teacher education program in the Concordia University system. The Department of Teacher Education offers 18 liberal arts-based Bachelor's degree programs and other programs that lead to recommendation for teaching licensure in Minnesota. All licensure programs listed below may also be completed by those who already have a degree.
